Motorcycles, are they that dangerous?

Motorcycle riding often gets labeled as extremely dangerous especially by those who dont ride. I have had so many people ask me “ aren’t you afraid of getting killed?” I know they mean well, but many are misinformed. There are actually many other everyday activities that carry equal or greater risks.

  • Climbing ladders

  • Working on roofs

  • Skiing

  • Mountain biking

  • Hiking

  • Distracted driving

  • And even walking

Lead to thousands of injuries every year.

In fact, accidental falls are far more deadly. In  2023 roughly 47,000 Americans died from falls in the US, while only about 6,300 died in motorcycle crashes. The numbers show that risk isn’t unique to motorcycles—it’s part of life.

Now we discussed numbers, is it worth the risk?

Riding demands focus, “head on a swivel”. When you’re on a motorcycle, your mind must stay engaged with the road, traffic, and the machine. That level of concentration creates a mental reset that many riders describe as stress relief and clarity. This state of relaxed awareness or “flow” state is very close to benifits of meditation. Studies from UCLA have provided scientific evidence that riding a motocycle significantly reduces biomarkers of stress. Participants in the study experienced a 28% decrease in cortisol after just 20 minutes of riding.

There are physical benefits too. Riding requires balance, core strength, and constant body control, especially during longer rides or on heavier touring bikes. This physical excersion and the excitement of riding stimulate the release of endorphins and adrenaline which elevate mood, increase pleasure and reduce pain.

Just as important is the community. People from all walks of life ride. The best place to find your people is at a bike night, charity rides, and group rides these bring people together and create strong social connections. You ever feel lonely? Get on two wheels and that won’t last long.

Back to safety, like any activity safety comes down to responsibility—training, protective gear, and attentive riding.

For many people, motorcycling isn’t just transportation. It’s freedom, focus, and a healthier mind.
